Imagery

Imagery- The verbal expression of sensory experience descriptive or figurative language. Used to create word pictures. Imagery is created by details that appeals to one or more of the 5 senses.

In the novel it shows Imagery because, the author describes every detail specifically.
For example on pg 1 " I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt the longing in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower ,just flying for the feel of wind ,split my heart down its seam."
This is descriptive because you can imagine what she is seeing in your head like a picture just painted and you can here the bees buzzing in your ears.
Another example is on pg 67 " A house so pink it remained scorched on the back of my eyelids after i looked away."
She creates an image in my head like the sun because it so bright and that happens so I imagine the house doing that to my eyes.
This are examples of Imagery.

Mood

Mood is an atmosphere or general feeling in the book is the mood of the story. The mood in the book fluctuates throughout the story as the setting changes. The story is very gloomy and sad in the beginning while shes at T rays house because you can feel how cruel he is and you get really scared to see whats he going to put her through next. Lily has to be very sneaky with what she does and u feel like the nervousness of if shes going to get caught or not. While shes at the peach stand she is not allowed to read, if she gets caught she gets in trouble.When she also gets in trouble u are scared to see what cruel punishment he is thinking of in his evil brain.The mood changes when lily gets to the pink house. You feel the welcoming love because the three sister let two strangers into their home. The hows feels inviting because the outside is described as "pepto bismal" and has a really nice front yard and yard. Everyone in the house seems like family, and have each others back so you feel the mood change towards a safer calmer and happy place for lily to be in. 

Tone

Tone: a writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject

     In the beginning of the story it began very gloomy (chapter's 1 to 4) because Lily was going through a tough time in her life. In the book it shows the deep scars (metaphorically) that were in her in mind from a young age. She was living with the thoughts of her mother's death. Knowing that she was the reason being because she shot her mother accidentally, made the beginning chapters gloomy.

     Towards the middle it gets very humdrum and calm. In the middle Lily had already moved into the pink house with the calender sisters. She found work helping August make the honey jars." On our first evening there, after prayers were finished and orange and pink swirls still hung in the sky from sunset, I went with August to the bee yard. I hadn't been out to the hives before, so to start off she gave me a lesson in what she called "bee yard etiquette" (page 92 paragraph 3 via paragraph 2). 

       The ending was kind of bitter sweet because not only was Lily able to find truth to her life but they also lost someone so close to them.When May died it brought down the ending. 

Theme

The writers central idea or main message about life is the theme.The theme of the story is that your past makes up who you are. All of the characters are effected by events in their past and when they come back to haunt them. Not many of the events are things that happen in present day. Lily was effected by the fact that she killed her mother, may was effected because her twin sister died and it was as if she had lost her other half. Although there is many present time events occurring, they are all effected by the past. The author always gives you background so that you really know the person and where they are coming from.
